The chiefs and elders of the Sissala East Municipality have petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to create the Sissala South District, with Welembelle as its capital.

The petition, presented by the President of the Sissala Council of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of Welembelle, Kuoro Professor Baduawaali II, was forwarded through the Upper West Regional Minister, Mr Charles Puozuing Lwanga.

It said a committee formed in 2018 to prepare proposals for the new district completed its work, but implementation stalled due to the absence of official 2020 census data required for district creation.

The chiefs cited the municipality’s vast size—5,092.8 square kilometres—as a major development constraint, noting that despite being a key producer of maize, soybeans, and yams, the area lacked adequate administrative support.

The petition noted that Welembelle already has basic infrastructure, including a polyclinic, a police station and schools, to support an immediate take-off.

Mr Lwanga assured the chiefs that the petition would be presented to the President. He invited the public to the unveiling of a regional development plan scheduled for January 31, which is expected to be inaugurated by the President.

“The president will be present to inaugurate the developmental agenda for the entire Upper West region.

During this event, we will present our investment opportunities and raw materials to the public”, he said.

The minister’s visit was, first and foremost, a mission of gratitude to thank the revered traditional leaders and the people of the Sissala East Municipality for the unwavering support and the trust placed in the NDC government during the 2024 general elections. — GNA
