Police arrest 22 Togolese nationals over illegal mining activities

The Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department has arrested 22 Togolese nationals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities within the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.

The arrest was carried out on January 23, when a team of police officers intercepted a Kia truck with registration number BA 223-12, driven by Abdul Majeed Yakubu.

Preliminary interrogation revealed that the occupants of the vehicle are nationals of Togo who were travelling to Tuntumba, a community identified as a hotspot for illegal mining activities, with the intention of engaging in galamsey operations.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for the necessary immigration and legal processes.
