The Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, Mavis Kuukua Bissue, has awarded scholarship bursaries to one hundred students to pursue various courses of study in tertiary institutions across Ghana.
The support comes under the Ayindamaanle Education Trust Fund (AETF), which Madam Bissue established in 2025 in honour of her campaign promise to support quality education in Ahanta West.
The fund is a long-term fund established to draw support from individuals and corporate Ghana to serve as a critical catalyst for those wanting to seek academic pursuits.
Beneficiaries of the scholarships would be studying in areas like Law, medicine, agriculture, engineering and Ahanta language studies.
At a colourful event in Agona Nkwanta, the constituency’s capital town, students and grateful parents who formed part of this cohort of beneficiaries gathered for what was to be a major springboard for their dreams and those of their communities.
“This initiative was created to address the financial challenges faced by brilliant but needy students, particularly those pursuing professional and specialised fields such as Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy, Law, MPhil in Ahanta Language, and other related programmes.
Our goal is to increase the number of skilled professionals from Ahanta West in the years ahead and ensure our municipality is well represented in critical sectors of national development,” Madam Bissue noted in his remarks at the event.
A key component of this scheme is also the full sponsorship handed to the first cohort of students enrolled into the study of Ahanta language at the University of Education, Winneba. This, too, is an initiative of the MP aimed at helping document and support the teaching and learning of the Ahanta language in school.
She went on to say that “with the approved orthography of the Ahanta language now ready for teaching, we are taking deliberate steps to promote Ayindaa in our classrooms. At the same time, we are supporting students to specialize in language studies so that, in the coming years, Ahanta West will have qualified experts who can help develop, teach, and preserve our language for future generations”
For many of the beneficiaries, this was a major boost for their education.
“I am overwhelmed. Paying fees is sometimes a tough responsibility for our parents to shoulder. This means that, as students, we sometimes have to endure days and nights of uncertainty when our parents are financially down.
With this initiative, we can now heave a sigh of relief,” said Maclanough Toku, who would be studying Petrochemical Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The event was chaired by Obrempon Hima Dekyi XIV, who is the Paramount Chief of Upper Dixcove and also doubles as the chairman of the board of trustees of the AETF.
He was full of praise for the MP and went on to implore the students to take advantage of the support they have been offered to realise their dreams and be motivated, also, to return to their communities to serve after their studies.
Municipal Chief Executive for Ahanta West, Ebenezer Kofi Aidoo, also noted that the initiative by the MP comes in to augment the many initiatives that the NDC government under the leadership of President John Mahama is implementing to support education in Ghana.
He mentioned policies like the No Fee Stress, which has ensured that the fees of nearly 200,000 university students were paid for by the government in 2025.
He pledged his full support, saying the assembly that he leads would support the initiative.
Mavis Kuukua Bissue is a first-term MP on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress. She is the first female MP of Ahanta West, located in the Western Region.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, describing the support as a significant relief that will cushion them against the financial pressures of tertiary education and allow them to focus on their studies.
