President Mahama (L) has been cautioned by Afenyo-Markin (R) to avoid been swayed by his members

The Minority in Parliament has cautioned President John Dramani Mahama against being influenced by party members to pursue a third term in office.

According to the group, such pressures represent a potential “temptation” that must be resisted.

In a press briefing on Monday, January 26, 2026, the Minority led by its leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, noted that while the president has publicly stated his lack of interest in a third term, many within his party are reportedly pushing the agenda.

“We are aware that Mr President himself says he is not interested in the third term agenda but we take this opportunity to also mention to Mr President that Mr President, we are aware that many of your party members want to push the agenda,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin urged the President to reaffirm his position directly to Ghanaians, warning against allowing party pressures to sway his decision.

He added that the Minority will oppose any such attempts to advance a third-term agenda for the President.

“Please tell them one more time. Maybe when you said so in Singapore, they didn’t hear you. Mr President, you haven’t spoken about your non-interest in third term in Ghana,” they said.

The Minority added, “Please tell your people that you are not interested at all. They shouldn’t lead you into temptation and by the way, it is not possible.”

The group’s caution follows several calls for a third term of governance for President Mahama after his current tenure.
