The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has taken a swipe at the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing the party of being distracted by internal affairs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) while overlooking what he described as an impending and potentially chaotic leadership contest within its own ranks.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, January 26, Afenyo-Markin said the NDC’s focus on developments within the NPP was misplaced, stressing that the ruling party itself faces an unresolved leadership race that could prove divisive.
“The NDC is busy talking about us, but what they have forgotten is that they also have a leadership contest awaiting them. Theirs is likely to be messy,” he stated.
The Minority Leader pointed to recent activities by the NDC’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, suggesting that his frequent nationwide “thank you” tours signal underlying manoeuvring within the party.
He further alleged that powerful interests within government, including Jubilee House, appear to have preferred candidates for the NDC’s flagbearership.
“Asiedu Nketia is always on a so-called ‘thank you’ tour, and it looks like the government also has its own preferred candidate. Jubilee House, too, has its own preferred candidate for flagbearer,” Afenyo-Markin claimed.
According to him, these dynamics will soon bring internal tensions within the NDC to the fore, shifting attention away from the opposition party.
“So their turn will come soon,” he added.
In contrast, Afenyo-Markin sought to project unity within the New Patriotic Party, assuring supporters and the wider public that the party would close ranks after its internal presidential contest.
He revealed that Members of Parliament from the NPP have pledged to rally behind whoever emerges victorious in the party’s presidential race after 31 January.
“What we want to state clearly is that in our party, the NPP, after 31st January, those of us in Parliament have vowed to unite and support whoever emerges as the winner of the presidential race,” he said.
