The National Peace Council (NPC) has commended the signing of a peace pact by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants ahead of the party’s presidential primary, urging them and their supporters to strictly adhere to its provisions.
All five aspirants signed the pact on Thursday, January 22, committing to unity, respect for party processes, and support for the eventual winner of the primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Alhaji Suallah Abdallah Quandah, Bono Regional Executive Secretary of the NPC, said the Council welcomed the peace agreement but stressed the need for compliance.
He noted that the NPP’s role in consolidating Ghana’s multi-party democracy was significant and urged the party to ensure a peaceful primary.
“As the primary approaches, aspirants and their supporters must prioritise peace, remain decorous, and avoid hate speech that could inflame passions, trigger violence, and disturb the nation’s prevailing peace,” Alhaji Quandah stated.
He added that strengthened party unity would position the NPP to contest Election 2028 confidently and contribute to nurturing Ghana’s democracy.
Alhaji Quandah wished the party an incident-free primary and prayed that all stakeholders would comply with the rules and regulations governing the elections in the supreme interest of the nation.
The aspirants are former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; Dr. Bryan Acheampong; Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; Ing. Kwabena Agyepong; and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
