Newmont has donated medical eqiupment to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has received medical equipment valued at over GH¢2 million to enhance healthcare delivery at the facility.

The equipment, delivered by Newmont Ghana, is expected to significantly strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide critical healthcare services in the country.

Speaking at the donation ceremony on January 26, 2026, the Country Manager for Newmont Ghana, Danquah Addo-Yobo, explained that the donation was aimed at supporting the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Paediatric Oncology Unit (POU).

“We donated ventilators, patient monitors, and blood gas analysis cartridges to support diagnostics and critical care in the ICU. For the Paediatric Oncology Unit, we donated patient monitors. These interventions can help save lives and improve patient outcomes in hospitals, particularly in intensive care units and for children undergoing cancer treatment.

“So, as a company, we also have a responsibility to provide meaningful support in the health sector to help improve healthcare delivery in the country, and this donation is a good example of that commitment,” he said.

Also speaking to the media, the Head of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Andrew Kwabena-Adade, expressed profound gratitude to Newmont for the donation.

“I want to say thank you to Newmont. The last major retooling of equipment in this hospital was done around 2012 or 2013. Medical equipment has a lifespan, and much of what we currently use has been in service for quite some time.

“Our goal is to replace these old machines with newer ones. We appealed to Newmont, and they responded positively. I also want to appeal to corporate Ghana to recognise that healthcare is a shared responsibility. We will continue knocking on their doors,” he said.

Dr Kwabena-Adade noted that with access to sophisticated equipment, there would be no need to send patients abroad for advanced medical procedures.

“If we have the right equipment to work with, there will be no need for anyone to be flown out of the country for specialised surgery, because we have the expertise and the capacity to deliver,” Dr Kwabena-Adade noted.

He further appealed to companies and philanthropists to assist the hospital with transport ventilators, noting that such equipment is scarce in the country.

“We need equipment such as transport ventilators, especially for critically ill patients who develop complications in theatre and need to be moved to the ICU. Currently, we have very few in the system, and we would be grateful if a company or individual philanthropist would come forward to support us,” he added.
