A video showing some suspected galamseyers being made to clean up a site after being arrested at the Abuakwa South District.
In a post shared via X on January 25, 2026, the miners could be seen refilling the excavated pits in an effort to reclaim the damaged land.
According to the story, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the district, Nana Adu Aikins Sarpong, announced the arrest of the suspected illegal miners whose actions have caused significant environmental damage near the homes of residents in Asikamu.
Following the arrests, the individuals were immediately ordered to begin refilling the land.
The video showed the “before” and “after” scenes of barren craters and the ongoing reclamation efforts by the suspected illegal miners.
This comes as illegal mining, known as galamsey, continues to wreak havoc across Ghana, resulting in deforestation, river pollution due to mercury, and soil degradation.
Peer-reviewed research has linked galamsey to various public health crises, including reduced human fertility from heavy metal exposure.
Social media was abuzz with reactions to the MCE’s swift actions, with many for and against the initiative.
User @AccraPolls commented, “What exactly is the MP for Abuakwa South doing after campaigning on promises of job creation for the youth in the area? Arrests alone won’t solve the problem—sustainable jobs are needed.”
Another user, @akurat_tymkipa, remarked, “Why do we keep using the word ‘suspect’? We see people destroying our environment, and you call them suspected illegal miners? It’s clear that what they are doing is illegal—throw them in jail!”
User @Investor4424 added, “These galamsey activities are getting out of hand. Because of money, people aren’t considering the consequences. This is serious, and the sooner we address it, the better.”
