Ghana has reinforced its commitment to global solidarity and climate-responsive humanitarian action following an additional donation of critical relief and reconstruction equipment to the Government of Jamaica, as the Caribbean nation rebuilds after the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

The intervention, carried out on the instructions of President John Dramani Mahama, includes the supply of construction equipment, air-conditioned tents, boats, outboard motors, medical supplies, water purifiers, and plumbing and electrical tools to support Jamaica’s ongoing recovery and rebuilding efforts.

The donation was formally received by Jamaica’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Honourable Kamina Abena Johnson Smith, JP, on behalf of the Jamaican government.

Beyond material support, Ghana has also approved Jamaica’s request to extend “Operation Boafo” from 30 days to 90 days, enabling sustained technical and humanitarian assistance during the critical post-disaster recovery phase.

Advocates say the gesture reflects a growing recognition that climate-induced disasters demand collective global responses, particularly among countries of the Global South that are disproportionately affected by extreme weather events.

Speaking on the broader implications of the intervention, officials emphasised that Ghana’s foreign policy is evolving beyond traditional aid-seeking models toward a values-driven approach rooted in solidarity, mutual support and shared humanity.

“Ghana’s foreign policy will no longer be defined by how much we can take from others, but by how much we can share with others—especially our friends in distress,” the statement noted.

Climate justice advocates have welcomed Ghana’s leadership, describing the move as a powerful example of South-South cooperation and a reminder that resilience is strengthened when nations stand together in times of crisis.

As climate change continues to intensify hurricanes, floods and other extreme events worldwide, Ghana’s support for Jamaica underscores the importance of people-centred diplomacy, regional cooperation and proactive humanitarian engagement.
