Kwabena Agyei Agyepong is an aspiring flagbearer of NPP
Aspiring flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has described the party’s flagbearer race as significantly more demanding than previous contests, citing the expansion of the party’s Electoral College as a major factor.
In an interview on JoyNews and monitored by GhanaWeb on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, he explained that the enlarged Electoral College has made campaigning more complex and resource intensive.
NPP Primary: January 31 is about leadership, not camps – George Andah
“In 2007, when I did my first stint, the Electoral College was very small — just 10 executives in each of the 230 constituencies. Now, we’ve expanded it to include five polling station executives in the 40,000 polling stations around the country.
“And we’ve also added former executives. We’re now looking at something around 220,000 delegates. So, it’s a big field, and it’s been very challenging, especially for some of us,” he remarked.

The former General Secretary of the NPP admitted that while the expansion has strengthened internal democracy, it has also introduced significant logistical and financial challenges for aspirants.
“One of the most difficult aspects is simply reaching out to the delegates. In some constituencies, there are as many as 1,500 delegates. And what has become necessary now is providing a little transport. Even a modest GH¢100 per person adds up to GH¢150,000. Multiply that by 276 constituencies, and it is really huge. So, it’s not very simple, it’s a difficult one,” he added.
The NPP has slated its presidential primary for Saturday, January 31, 2026, with over 200,000 delegates expected to vote at 333 polling centres across 276 constituencies nationwide.
Kwabena Agyepong will be contesting against several prominent figures, including former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong; Abetifi Member of Parliament Dr Bryan Acheampong, and former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
