The widow of the late Ayawaso East MP, Mahama Naser Toure, Hajia Amina Adam, has formally requested to undergo virtual vetting ahead of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary scheduled for February 7.
Her request was disclosed by the Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the NDC, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, on Tuesday, January 27. He explained that Hajia Amina Adam is currently observing Iddah—a four-month period of widowhood seclusion in line with Islamic tradition—making physical attendance at the vetting difficult.
“She has filed her nomination to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary slot, but because she is observing Iddah, she has asked to be vetted virtually. The party is yet to take a decision on her request,” Mr. Tetteh Chaie told journalists during the filing of nominations.
Hajia Amina Adam’s entry into the race follows the passing of her husband, Mahama Naser Toure, which created a vacancy in the constituency. Her candidacy has drawn attention as she seeks to continue his legacy while navigating cultural and religious obligations.
She will face four other contenders in the race for the party’s ticket, including Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed.
