The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has cautioned the public against fuel siphoning following an incident at Nsawam Okanta in the Greater Accra Region when a fuel tanker overturned.
It warned that the action, aside from being criminal, poses a significant risk to safety.
Denouncing the act in a statement, it urged residents and motorists to stay away from accident scenes and allow emergency services to manage such situations professionally.
“The GNFS strongly cautions the public against fuel siphoning, as it constitutes theft and poses extreme risks of fire, explosion, and loss of life.”
The accident on January 27, 2026, involved a DAF XF diesel tanker with registration GC 1084-11 on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
It took the intervention of the Police in securing the scene and preventing fuel siphoning, while the recovery team worked to safely overturn and tow the tanker to a secure location.
Personnel from the GNFS from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station successfully averted a potential fire or explosion by promptly applying foam and water to cool the tanker, control the diesel spillage, and secure the area.
