Fertility specialist Dr Promise Sefogah has advised women who are not ready to begin childbearing to consider fertility preservation early, cautioning that reproductive capacity reduces as women grow older.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on January 26, 2026, Dr Sefogah said fertility preservation offers women an alternative path to motherhood while they focus on education, career development, or other personal priorities.

According to him, women who do not foresee themselves starting families in the near future should begin conversations around preserving their fertility options.

“If you don’t see yourself settling to start having a family, then things like what we call fertility preservation can be brought onto the table for discussion,” he stated.

Dr Sefogah explained that the process involves the use of hormonal treatment to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs in one cycle, instead of the single egg that is naturally released each month.

“We put in some injections so that instead of developing or recruiting one egg in a cycle, we have a good number that would have gone to waste. We have them all developed, we take them out, and then we freeze them,” he said

He further estressed that the success of fertility preservation largely depends on timing, noting that eggs retrieved at a younger age are healthier and more viable for future use.

“So, we do this when you are 34, 35, or even before. The eggs are younger, and they’re of better quality,” Dr Sefogah added.

The fertility expert further noted that women who eventually decide to have children later in life can rely on preserved eggs to increase their chances of conception and safe delivery, even at advanced ages.

“If you want to finish all your academic and professional pursuits and you are in your late 40s, you have eggs that are much younger and of better quality for us to use to help you conceive healthy babies of your own,” he added.
