The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly has disbursed over 10,000 four-week-old chicks to 200 household poultry farmers under the government’s ‘Nkoko Nkitikiti’ poultry project.
Each beneficiary received 50 chicks, feed support and technical guidance to ensure the survival and sustainability of the project.
The historic distribution took place at the premises of the Municipal Assembly, marking a major milestone in efforts to boost local poultry production and strengthen livelihoods across the district.
The initiative fulfils a key campaign pledge by the NDC-government aimed at supporting livestock farmers, improving household nutrition and food security.
In an interview with Adom News, the Municipal Chief Executive for the Oforikrom, Anwel Ahmed Sadat, urged recipients to take proper care of the chicks and to embrace innovative and sustainable poultry practices.
He emphasised that the long-term success of the programme depends on how well farmers nurture this initial support into viable enterprises.
“The government has invested heavily in this pilot project, and if the first phase fails, I doubt it will be willing to make more investments”.
He noted that the initiative is not just a job-creation intervention but a deliberate policy to curb the heavy importation of frozen chicken and help to boost the economy.
Anwel Sadat urged Ghanaian youth, especially those in his municipality, to seize the opportunities in the poultry industry.
“Agriculture is a lucrative venture, and I invite our young people to be part of this growth story,” he said.
He highlighted the potential for income generation and economic empowerment.
He also made it clear that the intervention is non-partisan and inclusive, stressing that the project is designed to benefit all Ghanaians—regardless of political affiliation, creed, or colour.
In line with this principle, beneficiaries were carefully selected from diverse backgrounds across the district.
Municipal Agric Director, Lina Adutwumwaah Gyanfi, said her department will deploy veterinary surgeons and animal production officers to support beneficiaries.
She urged farmers to follow the guidelines given to ensure the initiative’s success.
Beneficiaries commended the leadership behind the project, especially President Mahama, for keeping faith with the Ghanaian people by delivering on a promise many had long waited to see materialise.
Further appreciation was extended to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Oforikrom Agriculture Office, and all officers and partners who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a smooth and successful rollout.
With thousands of chicks now in the hands of local farmers, the Nkoko Nkitikiti Project has moved from promise to practice, signalling a bold step toward sustainable poultry production and economic empowerment in Oforikrom municipality.
