Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested man over drug possession
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has apprehended a man identified as Atampugri Akanyani for the unlawful possession of narcotic drugs.
In a Facebook post shared by the Ghana Police Service on January 28, 2026, it was stated that Atampugri Akanyani, a driver of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus, was arrested at the Asanso checkpoint in the Ashanti Region after a routine check was conducted.
According to the police, officers discovered about seven hundred and thirteen slabs of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs during the inspection.

“The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect for the unlawful possession of seven hundred and thirteen slabs of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following an operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.
“The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested on January 26, 2026, when a police team on snap-check duty intercepted a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25 at the Asanso checkpoint,” the post read.
The post further stated that during a search of the vehicle, police officers discovered nine nylon sacks containing dried leaves concealed in the bus.
According to the statement, the suspect, Atampugri Akanyani, allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with an amount of GH¢150,000.
The police also noted that the suspect is currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
“A search conducted on the vehicle led to the discovery of nine nylon sacks containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs concealed in the bus. The sacks were opened, revealing a total of seven hundred and thirteen compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.
“During the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with an amount of GH¢150,000.00, which was declined,” the statement added.
