Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin is the PRO of the Ghana Armed Forces
The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr Mahama Tiah Abdul-Kabiru, has criticised the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for what he described as a selective and inadequate response to the recent assault on civilians and a journalist in Walewale.
In a social media post on January 28, 2026, Dr Abdul-Kabiru accused the military of ignoring the plight of scores of civilians who were allegedly assaulted and had their vehicles destroyed during the incident on January 26, 2026.
He argued that the press release issued by the GAF on January 28, which focused only on the alleged assault of a journalist, failed to capture the full extent of the brutality.
“The Ghana Armed Forces have decided to respond and in doing so they have ignored the plight of the scores of civilians who were equally assaulted and their vehicles destroyed. This selective amnesia and crassness of the full account of the unrefined atrocities against civilians in Walewale township is strikingly and stinkingly noticeable,” Dr Abdul-Kabiru said.
He stressed that justice must not be limited to the journalist alone but extended to all victims of the assault.
Walewale MP condemns alleged military assault on journalist and civilians
“The journalist, like the many other people, deserves justice and the Ministry of Defense should behave and act professionally, doing justice to all manner of persons,” he added.
The MP had earlier described the conduct of the soldiers as “barbaric, unprofessional and infantile,” warning that such actions were eroding public trust and instilling fear among residents.
He dismissed attempts to link the military’s actions to recent attacks on buses in the region, calling such explanations misleading.
Dr Abdul-Kabiru urged the Acting Minister for Defence to ensure accountability and transparency in the investigation, insisting that the military must not be allowed to downplay civilian suffering in its official communications.
