Veteran highlife musician Slim Buster has issued a blunt warning to emerging artistes, advising them to be cautious about relying on romantic partners or female sponsors to finance their music journeys.
According to the seasoned performer, many young musicians step into the industry armed with raw talent but lacking the financial backing needed to sustain their craft. That gap, he said, often leads them into support arrangements that can quietly limit both their freedom and future choices.
Slim Buster stressed that financial help rooted in personal relationships is rarely neutral, noting that emotional connections can easily evolve into expectations that influence an artiste’s lifestyle and career decisions.
“Most upcoming artistes don’t have money. They depend on some women. When a woman helps you, remember that they will come back for their money,” he said.
He urged young talents to carefully consider the long-term implications before accepting such assistance and to fully understand the commitments that may come with it.
“Young artistes who are depending on women to finance their music should be very careful. Once you allow a woman to help you, make sure you’re going to stick with them whether they’re good or bad,” he stated.
Slim Buster further warned against abandoning or ignoring benefactors once success arrives, emphasizing that fame does not erase past reliance.
“The very moment you decide to move away from them or neglect them because you’ve made it, they will come for you,” Slim Buster further said.
