The trotro driver being arrested by an officer for overpricing transport fares
A trotro driver and his mate are in custody after being arrested for allegedly overcharging passengers on the Circle to Dome route.
A video posted on X on January 28, 2026, captured the arrest, with the two being detained during a joint operation by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and National Security.
Instead of the approved fare, they were reportedly charging passengers GH¢20.
The video, which has quickly circulated online, depicted a chaotic scene at the busy highway station.
In the video, security officers could be heard repeatedly shouting, “Let’s go!”
The video captures plainclothes officers seen removing the driver and mate from their vehicle amidst a crowd of commuters.
While the driver and mate protested, the crowd erupted in supportive shouts.
Another officer is angrily heard instructing, “Take him away, take him away!” while one voice is clearly heard exclaiming, “Yes!”
This incident is part of a broader enforcement initiative launched in January 2026 by the GPRTU and authorities; thus, the crackdown is intended to curb illegal fare hikes, especially as fuel costs continue to rise.
Recent operations have already led to the arrest of 15 drivers at Awoshie on January 22, with an additional 27 arrests across various locations.
