The NDC will elect its representative to contest the Ayawaso East by-election
David Kanor has announced his intention to contest the Ayawaso East by-election as an independent candidate, following the demise of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Kanor said he has lived in the area for very long time and he believes he stands a strong chance against candidates from the major political parties, including the wife of the late MP, Hajia Amina Adam, and Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed.
“What I am bringing on board is a new direction for the community. I am trying to get a reset for Nima,” he said.
According to him, his intention is driven by a desire to change what he describes as the long-held negative perceptions associated with the Nima community.

He stated that contesting as an independent candidate is also intended to inspire the youth to take up leadership roles.
“Our community is often known for negative activities, but with my coming as a youth who was born and bred in Nima, we want to bring change. Ghana has gone through a reset, but my community has not.
“I want to show the youth that it is possible to lead the community and make a difference. Leadership should not always be left in the hands of elders or godfathers,” he added.
