Ex-convict, Six Others Arrested after Highway Robbery involving a Council of State Member

An ex-convict identified as Aminu Zebrilla and six other suspects are in police custody following their arrest in connection with a highway robbery in July 2025.

He is reported to have been convicted of robbery in 2012.

The remaining six suspects have been identified as Rasheed Yussif, Aaron Abana Baswifanga, Wilson Avason, Muntaru Iddrisu, Inusa Sumaila and Haruna Safianu.

The Council of State member and others were travelling along the Tamale-Buipe Highway on July 21, 2026, when the robbery incident occurred.

They were robbed of personal belongings, including mobile phones, some cash, wrist watches, reading glasses, a laptop and other items.

Arrest
On January 11, 2026, following intelligence gathered by the CID, a team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit was dispatched to Salaga in the Savannah region, leading to the arrest of suspect Rashida, who was found in possession of an iPhone 7 plus belonging to the victim.

Further investigation led the police to a mobile phone shop located at Dagomba Line in Salaga, where the shop attendant, Aaron, was arrested.

In an interrogation, he disclosed that the phone had been brought to the shop by his uncle, Wilson Avason, an environmental officer and the shop’s owner, who resides in Tamale.

On the arrest of suspect Wilson in Tamale, he said he purchased the phone from a phone repairer, Muntaro Iddrisu, for Ghc1,000.

Police then arrested suspect Muntaru Idrisu at the Tamale Aboabo Market, who led the officers to arrest Aminu, a 35-year-old Okada at Dungu.

Aminu admitted to selling the phone to Muntari for Ghc650, the CID Director-General, Lydia Yaako Donkor, recounted at a presser.

Two other accomplices, Inusa and Haruna, were both subsequently arrested from their hideout behind the Tamale China Mall.

Retrievals
A search of his room resulted in the retrieval of several items, including a locally manufactured short gun, one locally manufactured pistol, four live BB cartridges, and one locally manufactured sword with the inscription bedman.

Others items obtained were one live CZ ammunition, two live revolver ammunition, one face mask, one jack knife, a quantity of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, a talisman, a catapult, 15 assaulted mobile phones, a Jungle motorbike, 17 assorted wrist watches, five pen drives, one Telecel SIM card and three MTN cards removed from phones snatched from victims.

Ongoing Probe
The CID boss said the police investigation is ongoing to apprehend other suspects believed to be on the run and retrieve a weapon believed to be in their possession.
