The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has discounted long-held perceptions of enmity between Asantes and Ga-Dangmes.

This misconception takes its roots from the Katamanso War of 1826.

Recounting the history of the Katamanso War, Otumfuo noted that it was not between Asantes and the Gas.

“If you look at the war we fought during the era of Nana Osei Yaw Akoto, it was not with the Ga-Dangme. The British brought in people from Nigeria and other parts of the continent, and the Asantes were defeated.”

While setting the record straight, His Majesty posited that there is no enmity between the two ethnic groups as a result of the war.

“I don’t intend to take over Accra or Ghana. I am content with what God apportioned to me, and that is what I make sure to preserve and sustain.”

The Asantehene made these remarks when the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs visited the Manhyia Palace on Friday, January 30, 2026.

The delegation was led by the President, Oboade Notse Odaifio Welentsi III, who doubles as Nungua Mantse, who suggested that the two groups put behind them the past history to forge an alliance of friendship while extending an invitation to the Asantehene for the 200th Anniversary of the Katamanso War.

According to him, the anniversary should be used to bury the past and mark the beginning of friendship.

The visit was also used to seek collaboration with the Asantehene to attract international investment and request Otumfuo’s inclusion in a proposed conflict adjudication committee for the Region.

The delegation included Nene Tetteh Wakah III, the Vice President of the Greater Accra House of Chiefs; Nene Osroagbo Djangmah XII, Paramount Chief of Ningo Traditional Area; Gbetsoolor Nii Ashitey Akomfra III, Paramount Chief of Teshie; and Tatse Nii Laryea Akuetteh X, the Paramount Chief of Katamanso.
