The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man accused of making inciting comments that could threaten public peace in Bawku and its surrounding communities.
The suspect, identified as Raphael Azare Kariyama, was picked up through what the police described as an intelligence-led operation aimed at monitoring and stopping the spread of content that encourages violence or undermines public order and national security.
In a statement issued by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Saturday, January 31, the police said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to maintain peace in areas affected by tension.
“The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect for making inciting comments that could jeopardise peace in Bawku and surrounding communities,” the statement said.
According to the police, Mr Kariyama is currently in custody and will be taken to court to face the law.
“The suspect is currently in police custody and will be put before the court to face the full rigours of the law,” the statement added.
The police also revealed that investigations are continuing and that steps are being taken to arrest other people linked to the case.
“Efforts are ongoing to arrest other accomplices,” the CID said.
The Ghana Police Service used the opportunity to caution the public against making or sharing comments that could inflame tensions.
“The Ghana Police Service urges the general public to refrain from making, publishing, or sharing inciteful comments, as such acts undermine peace and security,” the statement noted.
