Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has arrived at the New Patriotic Party’s national headquarters in Accra ahead of his expected official declaration as the winner of the party’s presidential primaries.
His arrival comes as party executives, Members of Parliament and supporters converge on the headquarters following the close of voting and completion of collation by the party’s Electoral Committee.
Dr Bawumia emerged as the clear frontrunner in the closely contested race, which featured five aspirants: former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong; former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong; and former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyapong.
Security has been heightened at the premises as final preparations are made for the declaration, with party officials indicating that the announcement is imminent.
Sources within the party say the outcome reflects strong endorsement from delegates across the country, positioning Dr Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The presidential primaries, which form a critical part of the NPP’s internal democratic process, have been described by party leadership as largely peaceful and orderly.
Once officially declared, Dr Bawumia is expected to address party faithful, urging unity and outlining the next phase of the party’s campaign strategy as it turns attention to reclaiming power in 2028.
