Asantehene Officially Informed about Bawumia’s Election as NPP 2028 Flagbearer

The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has been formally notified about the election of former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as the 2028 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The information was relayed by the Ashanti Regional Campaign team, led by Dr Kwame Ayew Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, during the first Akwasidae festival of the year on February 1, 2026.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the lawmaker credited the prayers and blessings of the Asantehene for the victory.

“Yesterday, NPP went to the polls and elected his son,” he reported, adding that the former veep would visit the Palace after the return of the King from his announced leave of absence.

The Bawumia Campaign team in Kumasi further sought the blessings of the Asantehene to facilitate their endeavours for the year.

Dr Bawumia polled 110,643, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast in the Presidential Primary held on January 31, 2026, flooring his opponents, including former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
