The recent election of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 presidential elections has sparked a lively debate among Ghanaians, leading to a stark division in public opinion.

GhanaWeb TV’s Naomi Panyin Appiah-Danquah went to some parts of Accra on February 2, 2026, to garner the views of a cross-section of Ghanaians regarding the outcome of the primaries.

Many supporters of Dr Bawumia expressed their enthusiasm.

One petty trader stated, “Dr Bawumia is the right choice for Ghana. He understands the needs of the people and will bring the change we desperately need.”

Others highlighted his accomplishments and personality, believing he offers the best chance for the NPP to retain power and advance its agenda.

However, dissenting voices are also rising, as some individuals feel disheartened by the outcome and express concerns that this choice might create divisions within the party and jeopardize its prospects for the upcoming election.

One man voiced his disappointment, stating, “This decision could split the party and hurt our chances in 2028.”

Other critics raised concerns about the fairness of the primaries, fearing that this decision might undermine the party’s unity and limit its ability to garner widespread support.

One commentator remarked, “The NPP faces a significant challenge ahead. It will be crucial to reconcile the different factions within the party if they aim to succeed in the elections.”
