The Old Tafo Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region has distributed essential livelihood items to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the municipality to help improve their living conditions.
The items included sewing machines, refrigerators, bags, footwear, clutch motors, and bales of clothes. The support forms part of a government initiative aimed at empowering vulnerable groups to become economically independent.
The items were presented to the beneficiaries during a brief ceremony on Friday, January 30, 2026.
Speaking at the event, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Old Tafo, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, thanked President John Mahama for his government’s commitment to the welfare of persons with disabilities.
According to him, the central government’s continued support has enabled the assembly to provide practical assistance to vulnerable people in the municipality.
“The support we have received from the government has been significant, enabling us to provide these items to our beneficiaries,” Mr Sadiq said.
He explained that the items were carefully selected to help the beneficiaries start or expand small businesses.
“We are giving you these sewing machines to help you start your own tailoring businesses. The refrigerators will help you sell cold drinks and other perishable goods, while the bags and sandals will support you in petty trading,” he explained.
The MCE encouraged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items to improve their lives and support their families.
“We urge you to use these items to work hard and support yourselves, because disability is not inability. You have the potential to contribute to the economy and take care of your families,” he added.
The Head of the Social Welfare Department at the Old Tafo Municipal Assembly, Miss Anita Donkor, also advised the beneficiaries to use the items wisely.
She urged them to see the support as an opportunity to become self-reliant and financially stable.
“Use these items to generate income, support your families, and become independent. If you use them well, you will not only help yourselves but also contribute to the development of our community,” she said.
The beneficiaries expressed joy and appreciation for the support, describing it as timely and life-changing.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Agya Kwabena thanked the government and the assembly for the gesture. He promised that they would use the items for their intended purposes to improve their livelihoods.
He also appealed for additional support to help more people with disabilities in the municipality.
The Old Tafo Municipal Assembly says it remains committed to supporting persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups as part of efforts to promote inclusive development in the municipality.
