Nana B backs Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader amid calls for his removal

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has dismissed calls to remove Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

He described him as a capable and effective leader whose continued service is in the party’s best interest.

The calls followed claims that Mr Afenyo-Markin failed to advance the campaign of the party’s flagbearer, former Vice President of Ghana Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the Effutu Constituency during the NPP’s presidential primaries, with critics alleging that his stance contributed to another aspirant’s victory in the area.

Mr Boakye rejected the criticism, insisting that the Minority Leader has consistently demonstrated strong leadership in Parliament, particularly at a challenging time for the party.

“Mr Afenyo-Markin has been an exceptional leader, especially in these difficult moments. He has been very formidable in Parliament, and I believe it is in the party’s interest for him to continue the work he is doing,” he said in an interview on Citi FM on Monday, February 2.

He added that the party leadership is satisfied with Mr Afenyo-Markin’s performance, noting that much of the criticism surrounding his role is speculative and unfounded.

“The party is very happy with the way he has carried out his responsibilities, how he organises issues and provides leadership. People are simply offering their own commentary,” he said.

During Saturday’s presidential primary, Kennedy Agyapong secured the highest number of votes in the Effutu Constituency with 644 votes, while Dr Bawumia polled 79 votes and Dr Bryan Acheampong received 32 votes.

Nationally, Dr Bawumia emerged the clear winner of the NPP primaries with 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent, earning the mandate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

Kennedy Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes (23.76 per cent), followed by Dr Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53 per cent). Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong trailed with 1,999 votes (1.02 per cent) and 402 votes (0.21 per cent) respectively.
