VfL Wolfsburg have bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Ghana international centre-back Jonas Adjetey from Swiss side FC Basel, completing another key piece of business as the Bundesliga club reshapes its backline.
The 22-year-old joins Die Wölfe on a long-term deal running until 2030, following the club’s earlier Deadline Day acquisition of Jeanuel Belocian on loan from Bayer Leverkusen. Wolfsburg confirmed Adjetey’s arrival on Monday evening, signalling a clear intent to add depth, physicality and athleticism to their defence.
Adjetey arrives in Germany after three and a half seasons at FC Basel, where he established himself as a regular performer in domestic competition and on the European stage. His consistent displays in the Swiss Super League and continental tournaments attracted interest beyond Switzerland, culminating in his move to the Bundesliga.
Wolfsburg sporting director Pirmin Schwegler expressed confidence that the Ghanaian defender would make an immediate impact, highlighting his physical and technical attributes.
“Jonas is a physically strong player, quick and dominant in duels. He brings exactly the qualities we need in our defence,” Schwegler said.
“Over the past three and a half years at FC Basel, he proved himself both in the league and internationally. We have high expectations for Jonas and are convinced he will immediately strengthen our team.”
For Adjetey, the move represents a significant step forward in his career, with the defender eager to test himself in one of Europe’s top leagues and contribute to Wolfsburg’s ambitions.
“It means a lot to me to be in the Bundesliga now and take this step with VfL Wolfsburg. I’m looking forward to getting started immediately and will give everything every day to help us achieve the results we need,” he said.
The signing also marks a positive moment for Ghanaian football, with Adjetey joining the growing list of Black Stars players plying their trade in Germany’s top flight. Wolfsburg will be hoping the young defender’s energy, pace and strength translate quickly as they look to solidify their defence for the remainder of the season and beyond.
