Former Sekondi MP and Tourism Minister Andrew Egyapa Mercer says Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s win in the NPP presidential primary proves the former Vice President enjoys strong support from delegates nationwide.
“For me, it was obvious he would win. Delegates had hope in his leadership, and the data confirmed it,” Mercer said on Metro TV on Tuesday, February 3.
Addressing claims that Bawumia’s vote count fell from 2023, Mercer explained the difference was due to a more competitive race this year.
“The previous primary was a two-horse race. This one was a three-horse race because Dr. Bryan Acheampong was a force,” he said.
He also noted that Dr. Bawumia’s role in the 2024 elections did not affect delegate confidence. “He wasn’t the reason for our loss in 2024. I had no doubt he would win,” Mercer added.
Mercer concluded that the results, which saw Bawumia secure 56.48 percent of votes, reaffirm the former Vice President’s national appeal and provide momentum for the 2028 elections.
