A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Arthur Kennedy, has assessed President Mahama’s performance, giving him a “B” on the economy while raising concerns over galamsey and follow-through on government promises.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show, Dr. Kennedy described the President as “very accessible, very affable, and a very good communicator,” noting that he is doing well in terms of public engagement. However, he criticised the President for delivering “good speeches about almost everything” without consistent follow-through.
Dr. Kennedy outlined five key areas by which he would judge the President at the end of his term: galamsey, the economy, corruption, the diaspora, and job creation. On galamsey, he said he would give the President an incomplete, acknowledging that while efforts are being made, tangible results have yet to materialise. “He’s trying, but at the end of the day, governance is about results,” he said.
Regarding the economy, Dr. Kennedy said he would give President Mahama a B. “The reason he is not getting an A is that there is a lot of promise, but things haven’t been delivered. I want to see jobs on the ground, I want to see the role of the diaspora, and I want to see people on the street doing well,” he explained. While macroeconomic indicators suggest progress, he stressed that the impact must be visible to ordinary Ghanaians.
Dr. Kennedy also commented on the president’s new economic team, describing the members as “very familiar names” and suggesting the need for younger economists and social developers to bring fresh ideas into government. He urged that advice from the team be seriously considered and acted upon.
Dr Kennedy warned that if galamsey is not addressed by the end of the president’s term, it would be “very hard to call him a successful president,” emphasising that results, not intentions, define effective governance.
