The woman (L) says she is a relative of the deceased student Nana Agyei Ahyia (R) who died in Latvia
A woman who claims to be a close relative of Nana Yaw Agyei Ahyia, the Ghanaian student who died in Latvia, has issued a public clarification and apology to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following allegations she had previously made against the ministry.
The said woman had accused the ministry of charging the bereaved family money and issuing a fake airline ticket to the deceased’s mother, preventing her from travelling to Latvia as part of a government delegation.

She further alleged that Nana Agyei’s mother was invited to join the delegation but was turned away at Kotoka International Airport after officials allegedly informed her that her ticket was invalid, claims which the ministry has since debunked as false.
“I am speaking as a sister to the deceased. I’m talking about Nana Yaw Agyei… Nana Agyei’s mother was called yesterday to come to Kotoka International Airport with the delegates so they could travel to Latvia.
“On arrival, the officers told Nana Agyei’s mother that the plane ticket was fake. She was not able to go to Latvia,” she earlier alleged.
However, in a recent video sighted by GhanaWeb on February 3, 2026, she explained that her earlier allegations were made out of frustration and were influenced by the emotional distress surrounding the situation at the time, particularly the hardship Nana Agyei’s mother was experiencing.
“There’s a video of mine that circulated that did not sit well with the honorable Foreign Affairs Minister. Please, I made that video out of frustration and what Nana Agyei’s mother was going through at that time,” she stated.
She stressed that she did not intend to disparage the Foreign Affairs Minister or the ministry as an institution.
“I did not mean to make derogatory statements against the minister and his ministry as a whole,” she indicated.
Appealing for understanding, the woman asked for compassion while also expressing gratitude to the ministry for its conscious efforts in seeking justice for the deceased student.
“Please, temper justice with mercy. I thank you all for your hard work, your support throughout this journey and I want to commend the Foreign Affairs Minister for his support in getting justice for Nana Agyei,” she concluded.
Nana Agyei Ahyia, an 18-year-old Ghanaian student studying in Latvia, died under what the family believes were mysterious circumstances.
He was a first-year Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic) student at Riga Technical University and passed away on June 4, 2025.
According to the family, he had been living in an apartment on Baznicas Street in Riga. On June 1, 2025, just three days before his death, he reportedly sent a disturbing voice note claiming he had been poisoned.
