Members of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) have commenced a nationwide strike to protest changes to their service variation by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

The nationwide strike began today at the University of Ghana, where the members have gathered and are expected to affect universities across the country.

The strike was declared after the association raised concerns over the FWSC’s recent adjustments to conditions of service for senior university staff, which they describe as unilateral and detrimental to staff welfare.

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission is the government body responsible for regulating salaries, wages, and working conditions for public sector employees in Ghana. Its mandate includes setting policies on pay, allowances, and benefits to ensure fairness and consistency across government institutions, including universities.

The SSA-UoG said the changes imposed by the commission lacked adequate consultation with staff and their representatives, prompting the nationwide industrial action.

The strike is expected to disrupt academic and administrative activities, including lectures, examinations, and other operations across universities.

Authorities and education stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds, warning that prolonged industrial action could have wider implications for higher education and student welfare.

The association has called for immediate engagement with the FWSC and relevant government bodies to address their concerns and restore confidence in the management of staff conditions of service.

Until a resolution is reached, universities nationwide are likely to experience significant disruptions.
