The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwadaso, Eric Assibey, has warned artisans at Sofoline in the Ashanti Region against burning refuse at mechanic shops, highlighting the serious risk of fire outbreaks.
Speaking after visiting the site of a recent fire that destroyed at least 34 vehicles, Mr Assibey said the Municipal Assembly is stepping up measures to prevent future incidents.
“From what we have heard, the fire was sparked by burning refuse in the shops by an unknown person. To prevent a repeat, we are stepping up patrols in markets, mechanic shops, and other fire-prone areas with our task force, ensuring we are on top of potential hazards,” he said.
The devastating fire, which razed a cluster of mechanic shops, has prompted the Assembly to establish a task force to oversee daily activities in markets and shops, aiming to reduce the risk of future fires. Preliminary investigations suggest that the blaze may have been caused by someone burning refuse around the affected shops.
Mr Assibey urged artisans to prioritise sanitation, noting that a clean working environment is critical to preventing similar disasters. “Burning refuse at these shops poses significant dangers, capable of causing widespread destruction of property and potentially claiming lives,” he cautioned.
In support of the affected traders, the MCE handed over 20 packets of roofing sheets on behalf of the Regional Minister and Municipal Assembly to aid in rebuilding their container shops. He also assured them of ongoing government support, with measures being put in place to help restore their businesses.
Victims, guided by engineers and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), have begun reconstructing their shops following assessments to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Master Lamusu, speaking for the fire-affected artisans, expressed gratitude to the Assembly for its assistance.
He pledged that the artisans would implement the recommendations seriously to prevent future disasters and create a safer working environment.
