The Government, through the Ministry of Education, has announced plans to construct emergency infrastructure for two senior high schools (SHSs) affected by recent fire outbreaks.

A statement signed and issued by the Press Secretary to the Minister of Education, Hashmin Mohammed, explained that under the intervention, new girls’ dormitories would be constructed at the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) in Tamale in the Northern Region, while a 12-unit classroom block would be built for the Labone Senior High School in Labone in the Greater Accra Region.

The decision follows a separate devastating fire incident at the two schools, which displaced students in the two institutions, disrupting academic activities.

The fire outbreaks

In March last year, fierce fire swept through three girls’ dormitories at the Labone Senior High School in Accra while students were attending their afternoon prep, affecting three out of six dormitories. One dormitory was destroyed, while two others suffered partial damage.

In a related development on January 28, 2026, about 900 students of the NOBISCO were displaced after fire gutted the girls’ dormitory block.

The fire, which started at about 2 p.m, caused extensive damage to the building and destroyed students’ mattresses, trunks, uniforms, books and other essential learning materials.

Some students reportedly collapsed out of shock during the incident and were rushed to nearby health facilities.

The students could not salvage their belongings as the fire spread rapidly, leaving them helpless until personnel from the Ghana Fire Service arrived.

Commitment of government

The statement said the swift response was aimed at restoring safe and conducive learning environments while ensuring the continuity of teaching and learning.

The Ministry of Education assured students, parents, school authorities, and the general public that all necessary steps were being taken to fast-track the reconstruction works.

The statement further noted that measures would be put in place to improve safety standards in schools to prevent future incidents.
