The Member of Parliament for Offoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has said that while unity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is crucial, it is only the starting point and not a guarantee of victory in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, February 2, 2026, he warned the party against assuming that internal cohesion alone would return it to power.

“We are clear in our minds that when we are united as a party, we are a strong force, but that is only the foundation,” he said, stressing that the real challenge lies in reconnecting with ordinary Ghanaians.

According to him, the NPP must focus on regaining the trust and confidence of the electorate, particularly first-time voters.

“The bigger challenge is how to win back the love and the trust of the average Ghanaian,” Oppong Nkrumah stated.

He also noted that this process requires honesty and frank self-assessment.

“It starts with a lot of candour in what we did that went right, what we did that went wrong, and being able to communicate that clearly to the Ghanaian people,” he said.

Oppong Nkrumah emphasised that the party is not under any illusion that unity alone would be sufficient.

“We are not under any illusion that all that we need is a united house. No! Absolutely not,” he added.

He disclosed that the party has already begun internal reforms aimed at repositioning itself ahead of the 2028 polls, describing unity as only the base upon which a broader strategy must be built.

“There’s a lot of work behind the scenes that we are beginning to look into,” he said.

He also stated that reforms in policy development is a key part of the reset, noting that recent constitutional amendments have established a policy secretariat within the party.

“For the first time, we’ve set up a policy secretariat by constitutional fiat in the party,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia secured the NPP’s flagbearer slot for the 2028 presidential election after winning 56.48 per cent of the valid votes cast in the party’s contest held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
