The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has expressed strong support for the government’s decision to rename Kotoka International Airport, describing the move as long overdue.

According to him, the renaming plan represents an important step toward reclaiming Ghana’s national symbols to reflect the country’s values and heritage.

“This is a welcome and long-overdue step. It is time we reclaim our national symbols to reflect our values and heritage,” he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

The Minister emphasised that the current name of the airport is linked to a figure associated with the violent and unconstitutional overthrow of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

“We cannot continue to name our premier international gateway, a symbol of national pride and our first welcome to the world, after a figure associated with the violent and unconstitutional overthrow of our nation’s founder, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah,” he argued.

Armah-Kofi Buah described the proposed renaming to Accra International Airport as a step toward unity and a more forward-looking national identity.

“Renaming it to Accra International Airport is a move toward neutrality, unity, and a forward-looking national identity,” he stated.

His comments follow an earlier announcement by the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, on the government’s intention to rename the airport.

Ayariga disclosed that a bill will soon be laid before Parliament by the Minister of Transport to change the name of the country’s main international airport from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport.

He made the announcement while addressing journalists ahead of the first sitting of the Second Session of the 9th Parliament on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
