Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA) in the Ashanti Region have been charged to clear all obstructions to access routes meant for emergency services.

This is to be done in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service, Physical Planning Departments, and security agencies.

The order was given by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council led by the Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene.

In a statement, the Council noted that indiscriminate erection of stalls, containers, kiosks, and permanent
structures on roads, alleys, and access ways within markets and residential areas continue to hinder the swift movement of fire tenders during emergencies.

“This unacceptable practice has, on several occasions, delayed emergency response and increased losses that could otherwise have been minimised.”

The MMDAs have since been tasked with clearing structures to ensure all designated fire access routes, especially in markets, are kept clear at all times.

This was contained in a statement addressing an upscale in fire incidents in the Region.

The Minister while referencing preliminary investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service indicated that a significant number of these fire incidents are linked to electrical faults, illegal or poor wiring systems, improper handling and storage of flammable materials, and the use of open flames for cooking or lighting.
