Commuters in the national capital, Accra, continue to endure difficult conditions before and after work each day as they struggle to secure transport to their destinations.

In recent weeks, many commuters, mostly young workers, have been compelled to pay exorbitant fares to reach their workplaces and homes.

JoyNews’ daily monitoring of the situation indicates that conditions are steadily worsening.

On Wednesday, February 4, the JoyNews team visited the Madina lorry station and Kasoa, where commuters were still stranded at various lorry parks by mid-morning, desperately searching for vehicles to take them to work.

Several commuters who spoke to JoyNews said they often struggle to get direct transport to their destinations, as drivers exploit the shortage of vehicles by charging unapproved and inflated fares.

In Kasoa, one commuter told the team he was travelling to Dansoman and needed a Kaneshie-bound vehicle. However, the driver reportedly insisted on charging a Malam fare first, followed by an additional Kaneshie fare.

Another commuter alleged that the situation has created opportunities for thieves, noting that commuters rushing to board available vehicles are increasingly exposed to pickpocketing.
