Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs has arrived in Latvia for a two-day official visit aimed at seeking clarity and justice over the tragic death of Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Ahyia.
Announcing the visit, the Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the trip follows concerns raised by Ghanaians over the distressing and unclear circumstances surrounding the student’s death. He noted that addressing the matter directly with Latvian authorities was a key commitment he made to the Ghanaian public.
Hon. Ablakwa expressed appreciation to Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Her Excellency Baiba Braže, for the warm reception and what he described as productive bilateral engagements. According to him, the Latvian government has given firm assurances of full cooperation with Ghana in the pursuit of truth and justice.
The Minister is leading a six-member delegation comprising senior officials from Ghana’s Foreign Ministry, a forensic expert, and a pathologist. He clarified that although two family members of the deceased were unable to travel with the delegation due to visa processing delays, their visas have now been issued and they are expected to arrive in Latvia to join the team.
He further stressed that all members of the delegation, including the family and experts, are fully funded by the Ministry, dismissing allegations of extortion or fake travel arrangements as unfounded.
The delegation is scheduled to continue engagements with Latvia’s Ministries of Interior and Education, as well as investigators handling the case.
Hon. Ablakwa reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to protecting the welfare and dignity of all Ghanaians, both at home and abroad.
