The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has clarified that government has no personal issues with General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, but believes Ghana’s national history must be told in its entirety—an approach that has informed the decision to restore Kotoka International Airport to its original name, Accra International Airport.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Mr. Nikpe disclosed that a bill seeking to effect the name change is currently before Parliament and will undergo full debate by lawmakers.
“We don’t have anything against Kotoka. But the history of the nation must not be told in pieces. That is why a decision has been taken to restore the airport to its original name, Accra International Airport,” the Minister stated.
He acknowledged that while General Kotoka had admirable qualities as a soldier, government’s current priority is to redevelop and retool the airport to meet rising operational demands and international standards.
Mr. Nikpe further revealed that a Hajj village is currently under construction to help decongest the airport and improve services for pilgrims.
He stressed that Parliament will have the final say on the matter, noting that the initiative is grounded in national history rather than political considerations.
