Efforts to reactivate passenger rail services on the Kojokrom–Sekondi Railway Line have been disrupted by repeated acts of sabotage, the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has confirmed.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), Dr Frederick Appoh, told the Daily Graphic that unknown persons had deliberately cut critical earthing and jumper cables on Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) undergoing restoration at Kojokrom, rendering the trains inoperable, delaying planned trial runs.
Dr Appoh disclosed that GRDA’s technical team had been working since Thursday, January 29, 2026, to repair and recommission two DMUs stationed at Kojokrom as part of a broader initiative to restore passenger rail services along the Sekondi–Takoradi–Kojokrom corridor.
He explained that the project formed part of the government’s efforts to revitalise rail transport in the Western Region to improve urban mobility.
Sabotage
Management disclosed that repair works on one of the trains, DMU01, was successfully completed earlier this week and the unit was declared technically ready for testing.
He said trial operations were scheduled to begin last Thursday, February 5, 2026, but during final pre-operational inspections on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, technicians discovered that the earthing and jumper cables had been deliberately severed into pieces.
The damage, he said, forced the suspension of the planned test runs.
He revealed that the incident had been reported to the Western Regional Police Commander, adding that GRDA had requested an enhanced security presence at Kojokrom Station to protect railway assets and ongoing rehabilitation works.
Setback
He said despite the setback, management instructed the engineering team to carry out emergency repairs last Thursday, February 5, 2026, and after the repairs were completed, the train was once again prepared for operational testing.
In a further development, the cables were found to have been deliberately cut again at about 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, marking a second act of sabotage within days.
Dr Appoh described the incidents as deliberate attempts to undermine efforts to restore passenger rail services in the Western Region.
The matter has been reported again to the Western Regional Divisional Police Commander for urgent investigation.
Meanwhile, GRDA has resolved to proceed with the project despite the setbacks.
Dr Appoh stressed that railway infrastructure constituted a strategic national asset and that acts of vandalism or sabotage were serious criminal offences under Ghanaian law.
The authority appealed to residents and stakeholders in the Western Region to support the protection of railway infrastructure by reporting any suspicious activity to the security agencies.
