The Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned what it describes as an abuse of power by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
It warns that the security agency’s actions appear politically motivated to silence citizens who speak out against the government.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, Minority Chief Whip and Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, said the Minority had learnt “with displeasure another abusive display” of authority by the NIB, following the invitation and subsequent detention of broadcaster Kofi Ofosu Nkansah.
According to the Minority, the matter began on 3rd February 2026 when a communiqué was issued by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, to the Director-General of the NIB.
The communication requested an investigation into an allegation reportedly made by Ofosu Nkansah on Sompa Radio 106.5, suggesting that “an individual had paid to secure a scholarship to pursue studies abroad.”
The communiqué further directed the NIB to submit its findings.
The Minority said Ofosu Nkansah was invited to the NIB for a meeting at 10 am on 5th February 2026 to assist with investigations.
The statement noted that he voluntarily appeared at the NIB office “in the company of his legal counsel,” Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the MP for Manhyia South, but was later asked to go home “without being charged.”
However, the Minority said the NIB again invited Ofosu Nkansah on Monday, 9th February 2026, while he was in Kumasi visiting his “seriously ill father.”
The statement said he explained that he could not attend due to his father’s condition and requested permission to report on Wednesday, February 11.
But the Minority said the NIB insisted he report on Tuesday, February 10.
It said when he reported, he was taken to his house by “heavily armed NIB agents” to conduct a search, after which he was brought back to the NIB office at NIMA.
The Minority said it could not understand “the essence of such forcible actions, especially when Mr Nkansah has been fully cooperative,” describing the actions as an infringement of his rights.
It cited concerns about officers carrying weapons to his home, searching the premises “without consent,” and “forcibly whisking him to an unknown location.”
The statement warned that the conduct was “excessive and abusive,” adding that it was “not lost” on the Minority that the actions were “politically targeted” and aimed at “to cower people who speak out on matters at variance with the activities of the government of the day.”
The Minority said the situation was “counteractive and highly detrimental to the democracy and the rule of law” Ghana has built for decades.
It further claimed that as far as the Minority is aware, Ofosu Nkansah is now “at an unknown location,” and given how he was reportedly taken away, the caucus said it could not imagine “the ordeal he is undergoing with no recourse to his legal counsel.”
Calling the development “totally unacceptable,” the Minority demanded the “immediate release” of Kofi Ofosu Nkansah and insisted investigations should be carried out “in a civil and dignified manner.”
The Minority also argued that the deployment of the NIB is a distraction from the hardships facing ordinary citizens, listing key concerns as “the payment of cocoa farmers,” “unemployment,” and “the rising cost of living.”
“This action of the NIB on the directive of the government is an unfortunate diversion of the economic realities confronting the ordinary Ghanaian,” the statement said, urging government to focus its “full attention and force” on addressing these challenges affecting millions.
