Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG) has briefed the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, on ongoing efforts to advance Ghana’s nuclear energy programme for peaceful and civil use.
The meeting took place on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, when a delegation from Nuclear Power Ghana, led by its Executive Chief Director, Dr. Stephen Yamoah, paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister at the Ministry.
The delegation updated the Deputy Minister on progress made toward integrating nuclear power into Ghana’s energy mix to boost electricity production and strengthen long-term energy security.
According to the team, significant strides have been made in key areas, including site assessments, community engagement, vendor technology selection, capacity building, infrastructure development, and regulatory compliance to ensure safety.
They also outlined plans for grid integration and the potential export of excess power through the West African Power Pool (WAPP), positioning Ghana as a prospective regional hub for nuclear energy within West Africa.
In his remarks, Mr Quayson commended Nuclear Power Ghana for what he described as a strategic and structured approach to programme implementation.
He noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports initiatives that promote the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology, particularly in line with Ghana’s international obligations.
The Deputy Minister further stressed the importance of strict adherence to global safety standards and the need for strong collaboration among state institutions and international partners to advance the country’s nuclear energy objectives.
The meeting ended with a shared commitment to deepen cooperation between the Ministry and Nuclear Power Ghana as the country continues its preparations toward deploying nuclear power as part of its long-term energy strategy.
