The Minority caucus in Parliament has called for the immediate arrest of persons involved in the unlawful closure of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) office in Tema Central.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 12, 2026, and signed by the Ranking Member on the Parliamentary Committee on Health, Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, the Minority expressed grave concern over what it described as an unacceptable disruption of essential healthcare services.
According to the Caucus, the locking up of the NHIS office was allegedly carried out by certain political party executives, an act they say constitutes unlawful interference with a public institution.
The Minority stressed that the NHIS exists to serve vulnerable citizens and should not be “weaponised in partisan disputes.”
The Caucus is demanding decisive action from law enforcement authorities, insisting that all individuals directly involved must be apprehended and processed in accordance with Ghana’s laws.
“The immediate arrest of all persons directly involved is warranted,” the statement noted.
The Minority warned that failure to enforce the law could set a dangerous precedent, allowing political actors to obstruct public institutions without consequences.
The statement further emphasised that health services must never be disrupted for political leverage, noting that citizens seeking registration, renewals, and claims processing should not suffer due to internal political disagreements.
“We call for the swift reopening of the office and restoration of full services,” the Minority added.
The Caucus concluded by stating that it will not remain silent while public health infrastructure is compromised, urging accountability and immediate action to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare services.
“The rule of law must prevail, and accountability must be immediate and visible,” the statement concluded.
