Staff unions at the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) have petitioned the Minister for Education to dissolve and reconstitute the university’s Governing Council, following what they describe as a unilateral decision by the Council Chairman to terminate the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor.
In a letter dated February 11, 2026, the Joint Unions — comprising UTAG-GCTU, GAUA-GCTU, SSA-UoG-GCTU and TEWU-GH-GCTU — expressed grave concern over a letter issued by the Council Chairman on February 3, 2026, which sought to end the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure effective February 28, 2026.
According to the unions, the decision was taken without the approval of a duly convened meeting of the Governing Council, in breach of the Ghana Communication Technology University Act, 2020 (Act 1022), and the university’s statutes.
The petition argues that the Chairman acted outside his mandate and bypassed laid-down governance procedures, thereby rendering the termination invalid.
Beyond the immediate issue of the Vice-Chancellor’s removal, the unions also alleged what they described as a pattern of unilateral conduct, intimidation and interference by the Council Chairman.
They contend that such actions have undermined sound institutional governance and created uncertainty within the university community.
The unions are therefore calling on the Minister for Education to intervene urgently by nullifying the termination decision and reconstituting the Governing Council in the interest of stability and adherence to due process.
They further warned that failure to address their concerns within seven working days would compel them to resort to lawful industrial action to “defend the integrity of the university.”
