As Valentine’s Day draws near, the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment has extended heartfelt wishes to young people across Ghana, highlighting the occasion as a time to celebrate love, friendship and togetherness.
In a statement issued on Friday, February 13, the Ministry emphasised that this special day offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on fundamental values such as respect, responsibility and care for one another.
The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment has called on the youth to observe Valentine’s Day in ways that uplift and empower them, while consciously avoiding behaviours that could jeopardise their health and future prospects.
The Minister cautioned that drug and substance abuse not only damages the body and mind but also threatens the ambitions of young people poised to become Ghana’s future leaders.
He expressed deep concern over the rising incidence of teenage pregnancies and increasing rates of HIV infections among the youth, describing these trends as alarming challenges that endanger their health, education and opportunities.
The Minister emphasised the urgent need for collective action to safeguard the wellbeing of young people and secure the nation’s future.
“Valentine’s Day should be a celebration of love that builds, not destroys,” the Minister stressed. “I urge our youth to cherish themselves, respect themselves, respect their bodies, and commit to choices that secure their future.”
He further encouraged the nation to use the day to reaffirm a dedication to responsible living, mutual support, and the development of a strong, disciplined generation ready to lead Ghana towards greatness.
“Let us also distinguish this day as one free from substance abuse, including alcohol. Let us remember not to offer sex as a gift on this day but rather offer chocolate to a loved one,” he added.
As Valentine’s Day is observed nationwide, the Ministry is appealing to parents, guardians, educators and community leaders to collaborate in guiding young people towards positive choices.
The Ministry highlighted the crucial role that families, schools and communities play in shaping the values and decisions of youth, especially at a time when they face mounting social pressures.
