The Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has emphasised the need to expand domestic and intra-regional air routes to support Ghana’s ambition of becoming a leading aviation hub.

Speaking at the 5th AviationGhana Breakfast Meeting in Accra on February 10, 2026, Opare stressed that improved domestic connectivity is essential to strengthening the country’s overall aviation framework.

She noted that while international connectivity remains important, equal attention must be given to building stronger links between Ghana’s regional airports.

“If we want to make Ghana a hub in the West Africa region, we have to open up our connectivity, both international connections and domestic intra-regional flights such as Kumasi-Tamale, Tamale-Ho, and others,” she said.

Opare explained that increased domestic flight options would enhance passenger convenience, stimulate regional economic activity, and improve airport utilisation across the country.

She added that efficient domestic networks are a foundational component of successful hub models globally, enabling smoother passenger transfers and supporting broader connectivity strategies.

According to her, expanding intra-domestic routes would not only improve mobility within Ghana but also reinforce Accra’s role as a central node linking regional cities to international destinations.

The call comes amid wider discussions among aviation stakeholders on practical steps to deepen connectivity and drive sustainable growth in Ghana’s aviation sector.

The high-level forum, themed “Advancing Ghana’s Aviation Sector: Policy, Connectivity, and Sustainable Growth,” brought together key industry players to deliberate on policy direction, infrastructure development, and improved air connectivity.
