Africa World Airlines has marked a milestone in its growth story, celebrating the carriage of its five millionth passenger since launching commercial operations in 2012.
The event, held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Terminal 2 of the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, was characterised by music, applause and a surprise presentation to a frequent female traveller who unknowingly became the symbolic five millionth passenger as she checked in for her flight.
The visibly delighted customer, who flies with the airline at least once a week and sometimes twice, described AWA as “the best in the country” for its reliability and quality of service.
In recognition of her loyalty, the airline presented her with a reward package comprising five transferable return tickets to any destination on the AWA network and a luxury weekend stay for two at the Palms Hotel in Takoradi.
The ceremony drew government officials, aviation stakeholders and business partners, underscoring the airline’s position in Ghana’s aviation sector.
Addressing guests, the Founder and Board Chairman of AWA, Togbe Afede XIV, who is also the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, paid tribute to staff, partners and customers for their role in the airline’s journey.
He described AWA as the longest-surviving airline in Ghana since the collapse of Ghana Airways, noting that the five million passenger mark reflected resilience, strategic growth and customer confidence.
He recounted that the airline began operations with just two aircraft serving only the Accra to Kumasi route in 2012, but has since expanded into what he described as the safest and most reliable airline in the country. Today, AWA operates a fleet of eight modern Embraer jets across ten destinations in Ghana and West Africa.
Currently, the airline commands more than 55 per cent of Ghana’s domestic aviation market. Its route network includes Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi and Wa locally, as well as Lagos, Abuja, Monrovia, Freetown and Abidjan within the sub-region.
Among dignitaries present at the celebration were the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Abla Dzifa Gomashie; the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Dorcas Affo-Toffey; and senior executives from partner institutions such as Hainan Airlines, SSNIT, SAS Finance Group and the China-Africa Development Fund.
Over the years, AWA has collected multiple “Domestic Airline of the Year” accolades and, in 2019, was inducted into the CIMG Hall of Fame, cementing its standing within the industry.
For the airline, the five million passenger milestone represents more than a number. It signals over a decade of sustained operations in a sector that has historically faced turbulence in Ghana, and reflects the growing demand for reliable domestic and regional air travel.
