A suspect in connection with the robbery and murder of a policeman at Zebilla in the Upper East Region has been arrested by the police.

The arrest was effected by a special team deployed by the Inspector-General of Police following the fatal shooting incident on February 8, 2026.

A press statement dated February 14, 2026 issued by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police said the suspect, Simon Apusiga, also known as Ananga, aged 42, was arrested on February 10, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation.

He was picked from a hideout in the Tarkwa Huni Valley area of the Western Region.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect fled Zebilla shortly after the incident and was tracked to the Western Region through sustained intelligence gathering.

The police said the suspect is currently in custody assisting with investigations and will be put before court.

Efforts are underway to arrest other accomplices believed to have been involved in the attack.

Background

The arrest followed the fatal shooting of the policeman at the Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Bawku Division of the Upper East Region.

The policeman was part of a two-man police team travelling towards Zebilla on the night of February 8, 2026, when they reportedly encountered an armed robbery in progress.

The robbers allegedly opened fire upon sighting the officers.

He was taken to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital by a responding police team but was pronounced dead on arrival.
