Kwame Governs Agbodza, Ministry of Roads and Highways
The Ministry of Roads and Highways says the trailer driver who crashed into the North Dzorwulu Pedestrian Footbridge will bear the full cost of repairing the damaged structure, an amount estimated at GH¢2.5 million.
For many residents and commuters who use the footbridge daily, the incident was more than just another road accident.
It was a frightening moment that left a critical pedestrian link visibly cracked and partially displaced, raising concerns about public safety.
Speaking on Citi Tv’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, February 16, 2026, Head of the Public Relations Unit at the Ministry, Nasir Ahmed Yartey, confirmed that the driver has been arrested and is currently in police custody.
“The issue has come to our attention, and the culprit has been apprehended. The police are in full control, and we are dealing with it,” he stated.
According to Yartey, the Bridge Maintenance Unit of the Ghana Highway Authority immediately carried out an emergency technical inspection after the crash.
The assessment revealed significant localised structural damage caused by the force of the trailer’s impact.
“The estimate for the repair of the bridge has been put at around GH¢2.5 million, and the culprit is going to fully fund the repair works. We are going to ensure that this is done,” he added.
The Ministry estimates that repairs will take approximately six days once a work programme is rolled out. Officials say efforts will be fast-tracked to restore the bridge to safe use and minimise inconvenience to pedestrians.
The North Dzorwulu Pedestrian Footbridge, situated along the busy highway in the Greater Accra Region, now bears visible cracks, shifted sections, and damaged fittings, stark reminders of how vulnerable public infrastructure can be to reckless driving.
For pedestrians who rely on the bridge to safely cross the highway, anxiety remains high.
Some say they are hesitant to use it in its current state, fearing a possible collapse. Many are urging authorities to act swiftly to prevent a potential tragedy while repair works are being carried out.
